ActiveSG Gyms

Source: ActiveSG

Just starting out on your fitness journey? A common recommendation you’ll hear is to go for ActiveSG gyms. These gyms are run by the Singapore Sports Council with some of the most affordable prices, including membership and per entry rates. Perfect for those who just want to try try to see if working out is something you can commit to long term!

As an added incentive, there is a limited promotion ongoing at the time of writing where you can sign-up for free and get a complimentary $100 credits that you can use to pay for ActiveSG gym memberships. How cool is that?

But of course, there are some downsides to ActiveSG gyms compared to the others:

  1. There aren’t any personal trainers available (just staff who are there to ensure you don’t do something stupid like… steal a dumbbell) so you’ll really need to know what you’re doing if you step into one
  2. It can get a little crowded during peak hours
  3. Operating hours are from 7am to 10pm so it might not be the best option for you if your working hours are irregular

How To Choose The Right Gym For You

The first thing to work out before actually working out at a gym is to determine your budget, schedule and equipment needs. If you’re a super busy office worker for example, you wouldn’t want to be paying all that money for a Virgin Active membership and not have the time to use all their luxurious facilities. Instead, a 24 hour gym such as Anytime Fitness could suit you better.

For those who are completely new to working out, I’d recommend going on YouTube for some free workout suggestions and then going for a cheap pay per entry gym like ActiveSG or one month membership before committing to a longer term gym membership. Alternatively, you could hire a personal trainer to help personalise your regimen which some gyms also offer in-house.

For more experienced gym-goers, you’ll probably have certain equipment needs so it’s best to go for a free trial if available to check out how the gym actually is.

While this article mainly compares popular and big gym chains, don’t forget to compare boutique gyms near your area! What I would do is open up Google maps, type in “gyms” and pick the ones close to you to compare.

Lastly, don’t forget to use your credit card if you have one to pay for your gym membership and get some cash back!

Another way to begin your healthy lifestyle is to start eating healthier.
